This text focuses on the ever-changing definition of citizenship and the far-reaching social and political consequences of those changes. Exploring recent developments that have challenged long-accepted definitions of citizenship, this work addresses the increasing permeability of national boundaries, the transfer of sections of the state's sovereignty to supranational and subnational political authorities, and the creation of alternative communities of political mobilization as an alternative to the classic nation-state. In addition, calling on the democratic notions of self-determination, an argument is made for a form of multinational citizenship that provides equal recognition to the citizenship regimes of state and substate nations.
