Crucifixion

Part of a series inspired by key events in the New Testament (see also: Annunciation, Last Supper, Descent), this book presents a powerful collection of over 120 masterpieces depicting the Crucifixion of Christ as interpreted by artists throughout history. Beginning with the first images of Christ on the cross from the 5th century and concluding with a photograph by Robert Mapplethorpe, the works are presented in chronological order. With images spanning over 1,500 years, Crucifixion reflects the range of responses that great artists can bring to this highly emotional, controversial event. Works include a wide range of media, including illuminated manuscripts, ivories, frescos, oil paintings, etchings, sculpture, watercolors and photographs.
