Irish medieval scholar Waddell (1889-1965) was born in Japan, and wrote about it during the 1910s, before she wrote the major works for which she is known now. Burleigh, an Irish native who has lived in Japan for 20 years, finds in her letters that she once considered assembling her writings about Japan. He has now collected those that remain. The 11 pieces are presented in sections: After Strange Gods—stories of childhood; The Spoiled Buddha—tales of imagination; and The Uttermost Isles—essays on literature. They include both her prose version and her two-act play The Spoiled Buddha. There is no index. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
