Noting that fiction representing non-existent worlds that are pretty nice places to live have fallen into disrepute during the twilight of the 20th century, McKenna (philosophy, Pacific Lutheran U., Tacoma, Washington) finds resurgences among members of intentional communities and sociologists who study them, and among feminist science fiction writers and professors who study them. She examines the phenomenon as expressed in the work of Ursula K. LeGuine, Sally Miller Gearhart, Sheri Tepper, and Marge Piercy.
