Asian and Australian scholars of Asian studies advance a new approach to considering the history of Chinese settlement and interaction in southern Indochina and its surrounding areas. It is a nationally neutral concept that sets aside modern state boundaries to reconsider the situation of the 18th and early 19th centuries from which modern states emerged.
