Contains personal emails written by Palestinians that document the realities of the second Intifada
Provides uniquely moving insight into everyday life for Palestinians
Offers historical account to set events in context
Chronology of events provided
On March 29, 2002 the Israeli army attacked the civilian population of the West Bank. By the end of April, it had destroyed the Palestinian economic infrastructure, levelled large swaths of residential area, and by the beginning of June it had killed 1,741 Palestinians. Now, the numbers are much higher.
This book documents these events through a collection of witness accounts in electronic narratives emailed by those who were under attack. Deeply moving and courageous, they make a uniquely powerful and intimate account of the daily reality for Palestinians of Ariel Sharon's military strategies code-named Operation Defensive Shield and Operation Determined Path, and the death and destruction that they have caused throughout the Occupied Territories.
Most importantly, the witness voices bring to life the aggressive nature of these strategies they belie the noble motives ascribed to Sharon and those in his government and military who designed and carried them out. The editors argue that both military operations are but a prelude to Israel's ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians, and provide historical context, a chronology, and an analysis of the conflict that situates the horror of these days in their proper perspective.
"War Crimes in Palestine" is an essential record for those who want to understand what happened in the West Bank in the spring and summer of 2002, and what it portends for the future of the region.
