Harris spends little time on the successes and failures of Soviet socialism, she says, but neither does she merely explore the lifestyles of women in the post-Soviet Central Asian country. Rather, she inquires into the exercise of social control, and how this has been turned back on itself, resisted, evaded, and suborned by both women and men. Her pivots are the nature of the gendered power relations that produce and enable domination and their function within the various layers of social relations, the formation of human identity, and how her subjects form their gender identities and the significance of these for social control.
