Birth did not make Che Guevara. He was self-made. No other revolutionary hero will supplant him. For he practised exactly what he preached, until his murder for his cause. Since Bolivar, no man has had so great an ideal for the unity of the unlucky and divided continent of South America. He cannot be forgotten. Words were not enough for the fighter whom Sartre called 'the most complete man of his age'. He was professional in all he did, as a doctor, an economist, an ambassador, a strategist, a writer and a doer of his many other duties. He was all in one piece. His desire was to pursue everything to its just conclusion. When he said that working for one's fellow men was the greatest joy a man could have, it was true for him.

He said that no one was irreplaceable, and he applied this statement to himself. He exposed himself for his beliefs, and he died. This book of tributes shows that the world had to keep him alive after he was gone. His example would always be necessary. For the rich nations of the earth, and for the corrupt governments that rule many of the poor nations of the earth, Che Guevara remains a terrible and a beautiful enemy.
