These adjacent neighborhoods of northwest London include one of London’s largest open spaces, Hampstead Heath. Hampstead village began growing in the 18th century, while much of Belsize Park developed in the 19th century. Large houses were built as country retreats; Hampstead flourished as a spa, while Belsize House and gardens were another popular entertainment venue for Londoners. As building progressed, spiritual needs were served by churches and chapels, while public houses, theaters, and cinemas provided entertainment. Today Hampstead is a popular destination, with its alleys and narrow streets where Georgian mansions and modern properties sit side-by-side. Hampstead Heath attracts thousands of visitors every week: to walk or cycle; to visit Kenwood House; or enjoy the long-established bank holiday fairs which gave rise to the nickname, "'Appy 'Ampstead." There has been limited redevelopment, and much has survived.
