Leaders of Color in Higher Education: Unrecognized Triumphs in Harsh Institutions

Valverde has 35 years of experience as an educator and change agent for social justice and is currently director of a higher education consortium covering five southwestern states. His text is directed toward persons of color seeking leadership roles in higher education, and all people who want to create positive change and equality in higher education and/or social systems in general. Based on interviews with pioneers in the field and his own experiences as an administrator in higher education, his text provides background on the issues of change, difficulty, and leadership; examines the leadership challenges and dilemmas faced by people of color; and offers a list of lessons and practical guidelines emerging from the interviews.
