The Pull of the Earth: Participatory Ethnography in the School Garden

Thorp (Michigan State U.) shares an ethnography of how she spent four years at Jonesville Elementary School in the Midwest with children from mostly low-income families working with them to cultivate a garden. Using photos, poetry, sketches, journal entries, and illustrations and anecdotes by the children, she describes how she taught the children about learning from the environment, nutrition, nature, and living off the land.
