Feminist Communication Theory: Selections in Context

In this reader aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, editors Rakow (communications and women's studies, U. of North Dakota) and Wackwitz (speech communication, Oregon State U.) and their contributors examine issues of difference, voice and representation in current feminist communication theory. In the section on difference they describe recognizing and constructing positive a positive category of women, caring "(f)or" justice for people with disabilities, changing the meaning of citizenship for African women, and understanding the logic of plural feminism. In the section on voice they examine class unconsciousness, Asian American criticism and the politics of locality, and cultural forces that result in acceptance and even love. They examine the politics of representation from various viewpoints, including real and imagined women, feminist cultural criticism for women of color and images of them, the impact of technology, and the struggles of women in post-communist Russia.
