Leading From Below the Surface: A Non-Traditional Approach to School Leadership

Creighton (educational leadership, Sam Houston State U.) has taught at various grade levels and served as both a principal and superintendent in California, Ohio, and Washington, D.C. He argues that many of Joseph Badaracco's (Leading Quietly, 2002) ideas about leadership in the corporate world are applicable to school leadership. In this text, Creighton presents a conceptual framework based on organizational theory, emphasizing the importance of school leaders to resist the temptation to focus on what is visible on the surface, and instead to explore and investigate below the surface to get at the issues—and children—who are often neglected or only partially served.
