The Foundation Stage Teacher in Action: Teaching 3, 4 and 5 year olds

In previous editions consultant and early childhood specialist Edgington sought to raise awareness of the important work of the qualified nursery teacher, a professional who is often regarded as nothing more than a babysitter. However, changes in early childhood education regulations in the UK have prompted her to emphasize key points in her thinking and practice, which include ensuring children's rights to a real childhood free from pressure, where they learn emotional, social, and communication skills, and in which they are guided by respected professionals who take the responsibility to challenge developmentally inappropriate practices. She addresses the characteristics of the early childhood teacher and team, the coordination of practice, the practicalities of making children comfortable and challenging them to learn, keeping records, managing complexity, supporting other practitioners, and developing this crucial stage of learning.
