Critical Social Theory: Culture, Society and Critique

Tracing the development of critical theory during the 20th century, Dant links the traditions of the Frankfurt School, particularly the writing of Adorno, Horkheim, Marcuse, and Benjamin; and the slightly later Gallic tradition and the work of Lefebvre, Barthes, Gorz, Tourain, and Baudrillard. He has selected these particular writers in order to bolster his argument that criticism by theory has become a feature of later modernity. Culture as myth, work and non-work, the critique of everyday life, sex and sexuality, art and entertainment, knowledge and action, and politics are the spheres he considers.
