Race and Social Analysis

Insisting that "race is a central, not peripheral part of the way things work," Knowles (U. of Southampton) seeks to place race into the mainstream of social analysis. She describes the construction of race at different social levels. She first examines "race-making" in individual lives, exploring the autobiographies of African Americans. She then discusses mechanisms of race making in relation to space, discussing the spatial contours of race, the racial and ethnic "grammar" (or social practices) of globalization, and the impact of migration.
