Counselling and the Life Course

Sugarman (psychology, St. Martin's College, Lancaster, UK) introduces counseling students and practitioners to the concept of the life course as a multidimensional and multidisciplinary framework for thinking about clients' lives within and beyond the counseling setting. The text engages with the tension between recognizing age and life state as rich and significant dimensions of difference, on one hand, and resisting the pitfalls for age stereotypes and ageist discrimination, on the other. Structured exercises throughout the text afford opportunities for reflection on the concepts and their importance to the counselor/student reader, counseling practice, and clients.
