Contemporary Pakistan: Political Processes, Conflicts and Crises

Kukreja (political science, U. of Delhi, India) surveys the political structures and developments of Pakistan since its independence. She argues that the military- bureaucratic elites have extended hegemonic influence into the government, economy, and society, weakening movements towards democratic reform. The "misuse of religion" as a tool of legitimation and the dependency on unequal structures of economic power have further weaken civil institutions that could promote democracy.
