Hard pressed by competition from buses and automobiles, the railways set out to capture the imaginations of vacationers. Top-notch illustrators designed posters advertising train travel to historic castles and picturesque rural settings, bustling cities and seaside resorts. Slogans encouraged riders to spend time in the Peak District, visit Scarborough for "The Tonic Holiday," and above all to "See Britain by Train."
