A historian with the (presumably Canadian) Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Donaghy explores the political and economic ties and conflicts between the North American neighbors during the US administrations of Kennedy and Johnson and the Canadian administration of Pearson. While they differed sharply and visible about some issues, for example the Vietnam War, he says the two governments quietly overcame economic nationalist feelings in Canada to forge closer economic and trade ties.
