Proceedings of a workshop, Rehabilitating and Repairing the Buildings and Bridges of the Americas: Hemispheric Workshop on Future Directions, held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, April 23-24, 2001. Sponsored by Construction Institute of ASCE. Cosponsored by the Chancellor’s Office, the Department of Civil Engineering, and the Civil Infrastructure Research Center of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez; ISIS Canada; West Virginia University’s Constructed Facility Center; Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Non-Destructive Evaluation. Organized by Center of Hemispherical Cooperation; Civil Infrastructure Research Center.

This collection contains 17 papers that evaluate existing problems of infrastructure deterioration and propose specific research needs to improve the quality, durability, and efficiency of future rehabilitation and repair (R&R) work on bridges and buildings. Papers focus on the state of the art in R&R of buildings and bridges, various implementation problems, and future research priorities.

Topics include:

  • R&R strategies using fiber-reinforced polymers,
  • structural assessment and nondestructive evaluation,
  • life-cycle evaluation for rehabilitated structures,
  • sensors, and
  • case studies, such as the analysis of the structural collapse of a 26-story building and the repair and rehabilitation of a pony truss span bridges during service time.
