With all due respect to Richard Rive, Alex La Guma and the other professionals, this book - the first such detailed recreation of Black life in District Six in autobiographical form I've come across - exudes an honesty that rekindles the memories of old District Sixers, and hopefully also strikes a chord in the hearts of readers who never knew that place.

Sala kahle, District Six is free of posturing. It has great documentary value. The fact that it is the memoir of an African woman adds to its already considerable interest.' Vincent Kolbe
