South African Case Study on Social Exclusion

Based on a review of local and international literature on social determinants of health, this study addresses the dynamic, multi-dimensional phenomenon of social exclusion. Three government programs are investigated and analyzed in detail: free health care, child support grants, and the Children First Program. Interviews with key individuals in civil society, academics, and senior officials in national ministries are also included. Presenting insightful analysis and clear recommendations, this survey is ideal for social scientists, international agencies, and government ministries whose work concerns health equity.
