Chapter 1 describes ChinaAÆs road from communism to market socialism, from Deng XiaopingAÆs rise to power in 1978 to the present day. It chronicles the evolution of the global chocolate industry and its major players. It provides a concise history of the introduction of chocolate to China and the cultural, regulatory and logistical challenges that multinational chocolate companies faced there. It provides a snapshot of the state of ChinaAÆs emerging chocolate market and briefly introduces each of the players who are explored individually in the following 5 chapters.
