A swarm of people is smarter than the smartest individual expert à but not always. The patterns in swarms gone horribly wrong may be similar to those in COINs, but the motivations have nothing to do with collaborative innovation. There are ways to avoid mad swarms, though: make sure communication is always open, avoid egomania, and stay away from cult-like behavior.
