Modulation transfer function (MTF) is a metric used to specify image quality. This text provides a background in the application of MTF techniques to performance specification, estimation, and characterization of optical and electro-optical systems. It covers basic MTF terms and concepts and addresses issues such as MTF and Strehl radio, detector MTF, sampling MTF and aliasing, point-spread function, and increasing signal-to-noise ratio in MTF measurements. The text is intended for readers with a preparation equivalent to a bachelor's degree in electrical or optical engineering and some background in Fourier concepts. Boreman teaches optics and electrical engineering at the University of Central Florida. ^
