Speaking Grief in English Literary Culture: Shakespeare to Milton

Thirteen contributions from literary scholars explore the ways in which English writers in the 17th century dealt with the topic of grief. Coverage includes, for example, the resistance to consolation in Shakespeare, maternal elegies by women writers, and Eve's penitential tears in Paradise Lost. The idea for this volume originated at a special session at the Modern Language Association's convention (Toronto, December 1997), but many of the articles presented here were not a part of that session, and the others have undergone significant revisions.
