Fish for the Future Summary Report; A Study of International Fisheries Research

This study is one of the most comprehensive studies attempted in fisheries research. It is also an excellent example of how effective interagency cooperation can be in dealing with great challenges when there is consensus on the objectives and a willingness to overcome the obstacles that are bound to be encountered. More than a hundred scientists from different disciplines and geographical areas and a large number of people from both developing and industrial countries have been consulted in the preparation of the study. The objectives of the study were: (a) to determine the degree to which lack of information is an impediment to effective management and development of fisheries; (b) to assess the long-term potential contribution of research to the economic and social progress of the sector in developing countries; (c) to evaluate the capabilities of the developing countries to undertake the research needed; and (d) to propose ways and means to enhance, during the forthcoming decade, the effect of international aid on developing countries' research capacity.
