Mair, Steinhardt, and Goldin (all U. of Pennsylvania) present a collection of 92 primary texts for introductory college courses on the history, culture, and society of China, both modern and premodern; nearly all the works were translated specifically for the volume. Arranged in chronological order, each of the selections is introduced by a brief essay identifying its author, establishing the context, and raising important issues and questions. Suitable for use in undergraduate courses as either the main textbook for studying about Chinese civilization or as a supplement to a main textbook on the history of China.
