In Recovery: The Making of Mental Health Policy

The concept of "recovery-oriented" mental health systems has come to increasing prominence in recent years. Yet, according to Jacobson (psychiatry and public health sciences, U. of Toronto, Canada), the meaning of the term "recovery" is disputed within and between social entities. She explores the rise of "recovery-oriented" policy as it involved the making of social and political meaning, tracing the way "recovery" was constructed in American health reform movements since the mid-19th century and, in more recent years, during Wisconsin health system reform implementation in the 1990s.
