The Aftermath of the Civil War

The Civil War may have ended in 1865 for the United States, but the battles were not over for the newly united country. Struggles continued in the political arena -- over rights for the newly freed slaves and the treatment of Confederate states and their leaders. Reconstruction changed the South, but while blacks may have gained their freedom, they were denied equality. The effects of the Civil War continue to ripple through the nations history.
