A specialist in plays and entertainments from the late medieval to the early Stuart, Meagher (English, U. of Toronto) explores the specifically dramatic arts and practices that distinguish plays from poetry and other exclusively literary forms, in order to examine how Shakespeare characteristically employed them to build and enact dramatic designs toward performance. This is dramaturgy. He believes that many of Shakespeare's intentions for performance are detectably retrievable from the texts of the plays, and does not apologize for the unpopular assumption.
