Espina (1869-1955) wrote in many genres but is best known for her novels. She was the first Spanish woman to earn her living from her writing. Though many consider her 1920 Los metal de los muertos to be her best novel, Aldaz (Spanish, Northern Arizona U.) is the first to translate it into English. It describes events leading to the 1917 strike by the miners of Río Tinto, Spain's oldest copper mine, and diverges from her other novels in its pronounced populist sympathies and emphatic denunciation of injustices. A bibliography of Espina's work is included. Distributed in the US by Associated University Presses. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
