Democracy and Participation: Popular Protest and New Social Movements

This collection of case studies introduces particular social movements concerned with women's rights, ethnicity and race, mental health, peace, and antiprivatization. Issues of youth and political involvement, free speech, unemployment, and the role of voluntary and community groups in challenging traditional perspectives on democracy are explored. Together, these essays provide a context for discussing the nature of democracy, protest, and the role of new social movements.
