Most of the 39 pieces are examples of Roth's Jewish literary journalism before he was appointed as Reader in Post-Biblical Jewish History at Oxford University in 1939. He traveled extensively during the 1920s and 1930s and studied Hebrew manuscripts, early printed books, and ritual artifacts, which were readily available at the time. His writing provides a glimpse into the historical period from the perspective of a Jew and a historian. There is no index. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
