Planning Derry: Planning and Politics in Northern Ireland

Belfast-born, British-trained McSheffrey (architecture, Arizona State U.) was chief architect with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive before moving to the US and his academic career. He recounts the making and eventual implementation of a city and regional plan for the Londonderry area that was published in 1968, just before the civil rights campaign and resulting conflict and has been the basis for many plans since. He hopes that planners and development professionals will find the story interesting, but stresses that it is not an academic study of the planning process, and thinks other readers will enjoy it as well.
