John Wesley Powell's insatiable curiosity led him to explore the area of the US marked "unknown" on mapsan area he mapped and named the Grand Canyon. Powell was a one-armed Civil War veteran when he led the first expedition down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. The Now You Know Bio series is for grades 3-6.
