Marsh (Italian, Rutgers U.) introduces the revived popularity of Aesop-like fables in the Renaissance, initiated by Alberti's 100 Apologues (1437). After a biographical sketch of each author and list of primary and secondary references, side- by-side presentations in the original Latin and in English translation are supplied of Alberti's work and "imitations" by Scala, da Vinci, and Baldi. These translations are the first in English for all the authors but da Vinci, whose fables are presented in a new translation. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
