Bovet was bold, perhaps too bold, when he described his goal for a new, pluralist Europe at the end of the fourteenth century. Protecting himself by describing his work as a description of an innocent dream, Bovet dared allow despised religious minorities, including Jews and Muslims, to express their despair, fear and hope, to describe Rome and its denizens as "wicked," and to bargain for inclusion in society on a practical as well as a theological basis. This new edition includes the startling text with facing-page translation, extensive notes and Bovet's Latin marginalia, along with a comprehensive bibliography.
