Velma Bolyard Allen was born and reared in the Reno District of Preston County, West Virginia. She taught one term at the Sigley School in Preston County from 1941-1942, took time out for marriage and family, and returned to the classroom in 1954. Mrs. Allen taught first through eighth grade in Barbour County at the Spawlick, Cherry Hill, and Overfield schools before transferring to Philippi Elementary where she taught fourth and fifth grades. For a number of years she also taught eighth grade American and West Virginia history and later, sixth grade social studies at Philippi Junior High (Middle School). Mrs. Allen completed her teaching career in 1989.
