This study provides insight on a half-century of disputes between tribal, sport, and commercial fisherman, as well as the government, over the conservation and management of one of the world's largest freshwater fisheries. Instead of focusing on traditional policy making, Chiarappa (history and environmental studies, Western Michigan U.) and Szylvian (history, Western Michigan U.) use the diverse and contradictory recollections of these four competing groups to examine the historical factors that shape their resource-use values. The book originated as a public history project that appeared in venues around Lake Michigan beginning in March 2001. It is illustrated with black and white photos and political cartoons.
