This treatise traces the quandary of freedom of the will from its ancient origins through its development by contemporary philosophers and scientists, involving discussion drawn from many fields: history, philosophy, biology, physics, evolutionary epistemology, sociobiology, and etiquette. Stent has been a molecular biologist since the beginnings of that field, his primary affiliation, since 1952, with the U. of California-Berkeley; he's learned and eloquent in far-reaching fields and has been a member of the American Philosophical Society since 1984.
