Uncovering Student Ideas in Science: 25 Formative Assessment Probes

This resource for educators contains 25 "probes"--brief activities designed to help pinpoint students' preconceptions about core science topics. Each is presented in the form of a single worksheet that may be photocopied and passed out to students at the beginning of an instructional unit. Teacher notes accompanying each probe review science content, summarize relevant research on learning, and suggest instructional approaches for elementary, middle, and high school students.
