Remains of early Pleistocene fauna were first found at the site of Stránsá skála, on the outskirts of the Brno Basin, Moravia, in the early 20th century. This volume publishes the results of inter-disciplinary investigations carried out at this complex of open-air loess sites from 1980 to the 1990s. Reports are given on the history of excavation and research at the site, geology, local environment, the formation of the archaeological record, stratigraphy, dating and artefactual evidence, primarily lithic material. The distribution of lithics and the technologies represented, as well as re-fitting and use-wear analysis, are all discussed. With most evidence for this period in central Europe coming from cave sites with inherent problems of post-depositional disturbance, the information from open-air sites such as Stránska skála is proving invaluable.
