When Rain Gods Reigned: From Curios to Art at Tesuque Pueblo

This illustrated study of tourist trinkets that became important artifacts traces the history of the Pueblo Indian clay "rain gods" that have been sold to travelers in Tesuque Pueblo, N.M., since the 1880s. Anderson, an anthropologist interested in Southwestern native arts and aesthetics, describes how the Native American curio market popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to scholarly rejection of the rain gods and their relatives.
