The Victorious Youth

The statue Victorious Youth , popularly known as the "Getty bronze", is one of a very few life-size bronzes from ancient Greece known to exist in the world today. These surviving pieces are representatives of literally thousands of such statues that were once displayed in sanctuaries, city centers, and private homes and gardens. Their scarcity has led modern eyes to view them as one-of-a-kind works. The author takes a more objective view of these statues as she discusses Victorious Youth in its ancient context of public memorials, private collectors, market-oriented workshops, and long-distance transportation.

In this first full study of the sculpture in nearly twenty years, the author takes into account the most recent art-historical information and scientific data now known about the piece. Included is a complete conservation report.
