Music Observed: Studies in Memory of William C. Holmes

From ideas generated at the November 2000 annual meeting of the American Musicological Society comes this collection of articles based on the wide interests of legendary scholar and musician Holmes, late of the University of California at Irvine. Set in a format that accommodates scores and illustrations, the articles cover such diverse topics as the play of character and meaning in an opera of 1600, an experience with Rodgers and Hammerstein via Oklahoma, a Tuscan sacred tragedy of the late eighteenth century, the multiple messages of Mahler, the invention of the Spanish plucked viola, Ovid in opera, and Mendelsohn in love and marriage, along with many articles on specific operas.
