The Wetlands of Merseyside

This is the first in a new series presenting the results from English Heritage's survey of the wetlands in the north-western counties of England. Following introductory chapters on background and methodology, the authors examine the landscape, ecology, and archaeology of the North Wirral mosslands, the Sefton mosslands, the Central and Eastern mosslands, and the southern mosses. The final chapter provides a synthesis of the evidence from the early Mesolithic through to the post-medieval period. The wider significance of the Merseyside evidence is underlined at many points, for example in tracing the introduction of farming to the region perhaps several centuries earlier than for Britain as a whole.
