The papers which make up this book's chapters were first presented at an international conference, "The History of the Discovery of the Arctic Regions as seen through the Description of Travellers and the Work of Cartographers from Early Antiquity of the 18th Century." The collection is well illustrated with rare and ancient maps and traces the development of navigational systems which led to increasingly accurate maps.
