Greed, and Nazi plans of conquest, found an able match in a Russian industrialist emigre. Weeks before Pearl Harbor propelled the United States into World War Two.
A French Vichy gold bullion exchange for mercury, vital to the Nipponese war machine, would be a two-edged sword. The Axis powers could build bombs and bullets, while denying scarce material to America and its Allies. The Count would get his estates back from the Communists while his profiteering cronies would have access to raw materials and slave labor.
Their plan called for the bullion and mercury to be exchanged at Jekyll Island between a yacht, owned by the count's American wife, and a mysterious merchant submarine built by Germany, missing since the Great 1914-18 War.
But, nothing is sure in love, war – or “Murphy's Law”..
A Royal Navy hero, a feisty and much-married American dancer and matron, an irascible Georgia sheriff, an over the hill Coast Guard Captain, the FBI, a poacher and staff of The Club, all join forces to thwart the best laid plans of the “Master Race”.
Some critics of “The Jekyll Island Enigma” have claimed there are to many characters to keep track of, while others grouse it needs a prequel and/or sequel.
Guess what?
